Orchids

A protected natural environment

The Upper Aude Valley counts with a wide range of natural heritage shaped by the combination of several factors: the climate, landscape, geology and, above all, human activities. These factors make the Upper Aude Valley a rich and varied region where nature can be enjoyed and where humans make all the efforts to respect and protect the environment.

Educational booklets have been created to help teach environmental issues in this area and increase awareness among local people and visitors. These booklets are available at the Tourist Office.

Orchids

The numerous protected natural environments in the Aude are perfect for a large number of orchid species to bloom. The area is among the top three in France for orchids. 87 species have been registered, among them Ophrys magniflora, Barlia robertiana and Orchis mascula.
This floral wealth is due to the variety of landscapes in the Aude area, from the seaside to the mountains (the peak of Madres is 2,469 metre high), which also means different climates.
